Road to success starts with getting Turtles up to speed

By Edward Marshall

Every organization has at least three types of people - the Stars, the Turtles, and the Bad Apples.

Usually, the Stars comprise 15 percent to 20 percent of the work force, while the Bad Apples represent 3 percent to 5 percent.

It's pretty straightforward what to do with Bad Applies - they need to be let go. The Stars are already on fire - which means the company is getting their best effort.

The real issue for businesses that want to be best-in-class is how to get the other 75 percent to 80 percent of the work force, the Turtles, to be on fire - or close to it.

The goal of a high performance company is to have 80 percent of its people on fire 80 percent of the time. However, research over the past 20 years has found that, on average, companies are operating with 60 percent of the people at 30 percent.

Clearly, you can't be best-in-class operating at that energy level. Fortunately, there is an opportunity for real changes.

There are companies where the management doesn't want the people to fire-up for obvious reason that they can't keep them if the people fire-up as a lot of time firing up people back fires to some of the companies. If a company doesn't grow from year to year and do the same sh.t over and over a kind of sustained business model then actually fired-up people will back fire as they need to hire people every time a guy leaves because he/she got fired up. However, this is mainly true for the people who are connected to the delivery/production of the company. Every company can accommodate and welcome fired up 'sales people' as they can always be help with more business. So most of the time firing up people happens in the context of sales, marketing, business development OR when some delivery or production delivery date is very aggressive.

So my suggestion is keep the fire within yourself and be intelligent and knowledgeable enough to decide where and when you need to fire up.

Keep on investing time and energy on study and hobbies till the right time and right place shows up.

And if you are the manager of a team in such a company use the fire cautiously in a very controlled manner so that it doesn't back fire and people leave the job to find out a place where they can fulfill their dream.
